Jollibee affiliate allots P27M for branch expansion

Rating 2.3/5 (3 votes)

ImageJOLLIBEE FOOD Corp.’s (JFC) low-cost homestyle Filipino fastfood chain Manong Pepe’s Karinderia intends to have at least nine additional branches this year to cater to the growing demand for affordable meals.

Following the listed company’s annual stockholders meeting last Friday, Raffy dela Rosa, Manong Pepe’s president, told reporters the company has alloted P27 million for its branch expansion plans this year.

Barely a year into its operations, Manong Pepe’s has opened three outlets located in Mandaluyong, Quezon City and Muntinlupa.

Mr. dela Rosa said Manong Pepe’s plans to open the new branches all in Metro Manila, preferably near busy thoroughfares like EDSA. Jollibee President Tony Tan Caktiong said the company wants to open more Mang Pepe’s outlets to keep up with the "softening" consumer spending patterns due to the prevailing high prices of basic commodities.

Mr. dela Rosa said Manong Pepe’s, which serves complete meals for as low as P49, aims to capture the biggest segment of the average Filipino who prefers traditional, unbranded karinderias over branded restaurants.

Earlier this year, JFC said it plans to spend at least P6.8 billion to open more Jollibee stores, renovate existing ones and build three commissaries.

However, Mr. Tan Caktiong later announced that the country’s biggest fastfood chain might start reviewing its expansion plans in the coming months in light of the economic slowdown.

Mr. Tan Caktiong said that though they expect a slowdown in the second quarter, the current global condition could nevertheless be seen as an opportunity for the company because food, being a basic commodity of Filipinos, is resilient to economic fluctuations.

He added that Jollibee continues to be one of the inexpensive ways for families who want to eat out.

As of May this year, Jollibee has opened 52 new stores both here and abroad. Jollibee posted a net income growth of 9.26% to P2.36 billion last year from P2.16 billion in 2006. Jollibee shares dropped P0.50 to settle at P34 last Friday.

Commercial Space for Rent
written by Neil Aldrin Raymundo, January 17, 2010
Good day! I wish to offer for lease a commercial space located along Pablo Ocampo Sr. St.(formerly Vito Cruz St.), Malate, Manila. The site is between the new College of St. Benilde (School of Design and Arts) and PAG-IBIG Vito Cruz Branch. With the recent business boom in the area particularly the dramatic rise of residential condos and offices, the area promises to be a really strong market that businessmen can exploit. For details, please get in touch with me at 0928-3042893. Thank you.
